senator john kerry to serve on the team and the fbi agent was barred from taking part in the case for allegedly sending shirtless pictures of himself to a woman involved in the case. meanwhile, the ghost writer of broadwell's book, vernon loeb, says he was clueless about the affair between petraeus and broadwell. here with the latest on the scandal that keeps getting bigger and more bizarre, cnn's pentagon correspondent barbara starr and intelligence correspondent, suzanne kelly. welcome back to you both. >> thank you. >> when we talked on friday night, it was all just breaking and it seemed a relatively straightforward scandal but none of us thought it would stay that way, and sure enough, tonight, a really bizarre twist. it's not john kerry possibly becoming defense secretary, nothing bizarre about that at all. what is bizarre is this revelation in the "wall street journal" and it's reported there, we haven't independently corroborated this, that apparently the fbi agent originally detailed to investigate this scandal ended up sending shirtless pictures of himself to this other
reported friday, one of the candidates for panetta's job, when he does go, is actually senator john kerry who is being considered for defense essentially as a consolation prize if he does not get the state department job which is what he truly covets because the assumption right now is, and there's a lot of support for her inside the white house, the president will nominate susan rice to succeed hillary clinton instead. but if rice does get nominated she could have a pretty big confirmation battle on her hands. many republicans, including a guy like south carolina senator lindsey graham who normally ends up confirming a lot of the president's appointments, did in the first term, is promising a brutal confirmation pick if rice is picked. >> i'm not entertaining promoting anybody that i think was involved with the benghazi debacle. i'm not going to promote somebody i think has misled the country or is incompetent. that's my view of susan rice. there are other people out there. i don't want to fight with the president over something like this, but there has to be an accountability. you just
john kerry talked about as defense secretary, wolf? >> yeah, there's been reports that john kerry, who i always assumed wanted to be secretary of state could be the next secretary of defense leon panetta has made it clear he's ready to move on and go back to california after all these years in washington, former cia director, now the secretary of defense. i don't know how long that will last. but if kerry is nominated to be the secretary of defense, that does leave hillary clinton's job at the state department open. and susan rice was always -- at least i always believed she was the front-runner until those controversial comments she made about the benghazi killing of the u.s. ambassador and three other americans on those five sunday talk shows. and the republicans really have been going after her. and if the president stands firm and nominates her to be the next secretary of state, it will be a bruising confirmation hearing, there's no doubt about that. my p sense is, he probably wants her to be the secretary of state, but we'll see if -- how that confirmation process will go forward.

john kerry or al gore did. president obama won in some key swing states with predominantly white voters. many of them live in the suburbs or rural areas. take iowa, where white voters made up 93% of the electorate. more than half of those voters, 51%, backed president obama to 47% for romney. it was the same breakdown in new hampshire where white voters were also 93% of the electorate and 51% voted for president obama. there's also the fact that many new hampshire voters live in rural areas, yet president obama won those rural voters by 16 points, 57-41%. as all the numbers suggest, it's not quite as simple as congressman ryan suggests. urban voters can't take all the credit for the president's win. joining me now is cnn contributor david frum who has a lot to say about this. his new ebook is "why romney lost." he joins me along with paul begala and alex castellano. liberals have been critical of ryan's comments about urban areas. what do you think of it? >> i don't want to ascribe any sort of dog whistle to it. let's just actually use the language he did, which is geographic. he's just
